BYD Offers Key Battery Warranty Support for V2G Trial in Australia

Concerns over warranty coverage has been a significant obstacle to V2G adoption at scale in Australia. The support provided by BYD is intended to address this hurdle. Preliminary results from the trial demonstrate the value of V2G for a range of households. One New South Wales household earned $300 overnight and a Victorian household earned $257 in a day, according to Amber Electric.

Amber Electric, an energy retailer in Australia, recently announced that customers’ EVs participating in the company’s current V2G trial with the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) will have their vehicles warranted by leading Chinese EV automaker BYD as part of the program.

Concerns over warranty coverage has been a significant obstacle to V2G adoption at scale in Australia. The support provided by BYD is intended to address this hurdle.

Preliminary results from the trial demonstrate the value of V2G for a range of households. One New South Wales household earned $300 overnight and a Victorian household earned $257 in a day, according to Amber. The company notes the trial will also show that V2G with Amber does not affect EV battery health beyond normal driving use.

“EVs are the largest and most flexible battery most households will ever own,” said co-CEO Dan Adams in a statement. “With this trial we’re showing what’s possible when you combine Australia’s love of solar with the rise of electric vehicles. “

“Unlike other V2G trials that lock customers into strict charging hours or minimum plug-in times, our approach incentivises customers to plug in, to power their homes or earn from the grid while giving households full flexibility -- they keep the value, and Amber’s automation does the work. Unlocking that potential creates real financial wins for customers while supporting the transition to renewables across the energy and transport sectors.”

BYD Chief Product Officer, Sajid Hasan said: “BYD is extremely proud to partner with Amber, a likeminded pioneer & disruptor in the energy space. Working together, we will help customers unlock the full potential of their New Energy Vehicle to power their homes and/or harnessing excess solar and sending it back to the grid, when the grid needs it.”

Amber reports that nearly 4000 Australians are currently on its V2G waitlist, and a commercial product is planned for 2026. The initial 50 chargers for the trial will be supplied by StarCharge, a global provider of V2G technology specializing in bidirectional equipment. Amber will also test chargers from all brands available in Australia, including SigEnergy, an existing battery partner.
